The Immobilizer System

A key that is chipped that is also known as a Smart Key, has a RFID microchip that transmits an encrypted passcode from the key to the immobilizer system of the vehicle. If the code on the chip is in line with the code on the car's immobilizer system, the car will start.

This is an important security measure to prevent car thieves from hotwiring the immobilizer or bypassing it in any other way. If the immobilizer does not recognize the key it will not turn on even if someone attempts to short-circuit the ignition circuit.

Modern cars come with sophisticated electronic Engine Immobilizers, which use shifting or rolling codes. The system's intelligent algorithm will alter the second code every time the key's used and then insert it into the chip of the key. The first code is always in place and the immobilizer scans the codes each time the ignition key is turned.

This is an extremely sophisticated technology that's difficult to hack. This is why the majority of stolen vehicles can't start.
