If you're looking for a basic robot vacuum, but without the features that make other models, this one is a great option. It is capable of removing pet hair, cat litter, and Cheerios on hardwood floors and even sucked up sand during my tests.

It maps rooms quickly and provides solid obstacle avoidance. It can also be controlled manually with the remote included.

1. iRobot Roomba s9+

The s9+ robot vacuum is the most effective we've ever tested to clean carpets and hard floors. It has some of the strongest suction of any robot cleaner on the market and does an excellent job of getting rid of pet hair. It can be programmed to perform multiple passes or adjust suction levels based on the size of the room, something that we haven't seen on other models. The app lets you alter how it works and even select the time it will start working, so that you can be within the room while it's working.

Smart mapping produces a comprehensive home map that can help the S9+ navigate efficiently and plan routes. It also self-empties so you don't have to be around to assist. It can also recharge itself in mid-clean. In our testing the s9+ was able to maneuver around obstacles like tables and power cables with ease and never lost its charge or got stuck. However, it doesn't have the hazard avoidance capability of newer models and can get tangled up on carpet tassels or other obstacles that are difficult to see.

The s9+ features a flat front, unlike the majority of circular robots. It also has a squared-off front which makes it easier to reach corners than models with curving fronts. It's also quieter than the previous irobot shop model we test and is less bulky than the Neato Botvac D7. It's not expensive, but you'll get a lot of value for your money, especially considering how well it works and that you don't have worry about emptying the trash bin afterward. It's also usually on sale at Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Amazon Prime Day.

2. iRobot Roomba j7+

The j7+ is one of the most advanced robot cleaners available. It's equipped with iRobot Genius technology that gives it the ability to sense obstacles and move around them, meaning that you don't need to worry about it smashing into walls or furniture. It also slows down when it is close to an object so that it can gently clean edges. This is especially helpful if you have small pets who leave their messes behind.

The j7+ also has the ability to mop and vacuum with the help of a mopsitter. When it detects that you are in a place that needs to be cleaned, it switches from its normal cleaning mode and activates an arm with a pad. It mopped the floor using a gentle touch, leaving my floors feeling and looking like they'd been meticulously cleaned.

The j7+ recharges itself when it is done mopping. It then returns to the point where it left off and resumes its cleaning. It usually runs for 85 minutes, give or take, in my house before needing to return to the dock to recharge. This is less than the s9+, however it's still impressive for a robot that can do both vacuuming and mopping.

As with other iRobot cleaners, the j7+ spots obstacles that block its path and avoids them. It also comes with what iRobot calls Cliff Detect technology, which prevents it from falling down the stairs. It's a fantastic safety feature for families.

The j7+'s bin onboard is quite small, so you'll have return it to the dock to empty it often when your home is huge. The j7+ can be stored easily. The Clean Base that comes with it functions as charging dock, a separate dustbin and an internal bin for the j7+ to place dirt into.

3. Shark iQ

This robot vacuums carpets and hard surfaces simultaneously. Matrix Clean Navigation is also included, which utilizes grids to cover the entire house. The vacuum automatically empties after each run. You can also see the battery status and actual life of the vacuum by looking at the two lights on the top. Press the button to unlock the bin and empty it. It can hold up to a week's worth trash, and the process is easy enough to complete from any place in the house.

Despite its impressive performance on plain flooring, this model has some issues with carpets with low pile and struggles to suck up heavy debris as the dirt compartment fills up. But it's well constructed and has a long battery life that you can extend by using the eco-friendly 'Eco' mode.

The Shark IQ is compatible with both Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant and allows you to control it with your voice. Its app allows you to name your robot (mine is Sharky Shark), remotely activate and schedule its runs, and track your cleaning history as well as any errors that are notified. You can make a map of your house and create no-go zones manually.

The Shark iQ is more expensive than the iRobot Roomba j7+, however, it offers more features for mapping and apps and superior cleaning performance on all surface types. It also charges faster and is caught in rug tassels less frequently, which reduces its recurring costs. The model is not able to keep away from pet bowls or furniture. You must use physical boundaries strips to shield the model from these items.

4. iRobot Roomba 694

The Roomba 694 has a sleek and elegant design that will match your home decor. It's a great robot for those looking for a machine they can install and forget about. It will learn your habits of cleaning to provide you with a personalized schedule and can be used with Google Assistant or Alexa voice assistants that allow you to start a clean with just the sound of your voice. A wide array of sensors lets it navigate the natural obtacles that surround your home while cleaning. A smart bumper cushions the impact of bumps into furniture legs or walls. Four "cliff" sensors on the sides and front let it know if it's about to approach the edge of a dropoff, such as the stairs or a balcony, and it's able to back away.

This model offers a great value in the sub-$300 robot vacuum category. It comes with a three-stage cleaning system and dual multi-surface brushes that help remove dirt from carpeted and hard floors and an edge-sweeping tool will take care of corners and edges. The robot vacuum has a number of convenience features including Dirt Detect, which focuses more time cleaning heavily soiled areas. It can be programmed to clean at certain intervals, and it also comes with a remote control app.

The iRobot Roomba 694 isn't as technologically advanced as the i7 that can self-empty its own trash compartment, and it doesn't have an integrated mapping system or the ability to create virtual boundary markers. However, it feels sturdier and has lower recurring costs than the less expensive RoboVac G30, has a much larger dustbin, charges more quickly, can maneuver around obstructions like electrical cords more easily and is more effective on floors that are bare and low-pile carpet than the iRobot Roomba 614.

5. Eufy 11s

The Eufy 11s is a small elegant robot vacuum that gives an excellent value for the money. It can remove pet hair easily and has a huge dirt compartment, and can run for a long duration on a single charge. It's not easy to maintain and has issues with navigation. It doesn't come with voice control or a companion app but has a simple to use remote. It doesn't inform you when the dust bin is full. You'll need to check it often.

The eufy is superior to the bObsweep Bob Pro in most ways, but it's not as good as the iRobot Roomba 694 in many other ways. The iRobot is better-built, uses fewer parts that require regular maintenance, features a HEPA filter that can last longer on a single charge, and delivers better cleaning performance on floors that are bare and low- and high-pile carpet. It also comes with a smarter navigation system that is able to maneuver over obstacles and incorporate more advanced automated features, including boundary strips.

Although the eufy is still a decent choice, I recommend the iRobot Roomba 900 Series for most users. The iRobot is better-built, easier to maintain, has a bigger dustbin, and provides better performance on all surface types. It is also faster to recharge and has a longer battery life.

The eufy robot is also better than the ILIFE A4s but not as good as the top-end models like the Roborock S7 maxV Ultra. The iRobot is built better, has a larger dustbin, and incurs fewer ongoing costs. It also has a more advanced automation feature including boundary lines and a navigation system that is smarter. The irobot store can also take care of pet hair more effectively, and is easier to maintain than the eufy.
