How to Unlock your Vehicle

Modern electronic key fobs provide greater functionality and ease of use as compared to manual keys. Batteries eventually degrade and need to be changed. If your Volvo key fob is beginning to malfunction intermittently, it's an indication that the battery is depleted and will need replacement in the near future.

You can replace the Volvo key fob batteries by following a few simple steps. Choose a clean, dry surface to work on. Set out all the tools you'll need. Then, locate the battery's hatch and open it using the flathead, a coin, or any other similar tool. Next, carefully pry the battery out of its socket by lifting it up on the side that is closest to the key-ring loop. Be sure to use rubber gloves to protect the contacts or the clips.

After the battery is removed, put the new battery into its socket. Make sure that the positive side of the battery is facing up and that all clips are secured. Then, slide the cover back towards the key-ring loop section until it loosens and slips off. Then, remove the cover to reveal the hidden key blade. This can be used to unlock your car from the driver's doors in the event that you've lost or damaged the key fob.

Find the small hole that houses the backup/emergency metal ignition key. Inject the blade of a screwdriver or pry bar tool into this slot and gently open the back of the fob of the key. Once the fob is opened then locate the CR2032 3V battery and remove it. Replace the battery, then snap to the fob.

Note: Certain older Volvo models have a different type of battery that is called the CR2025. CR2025 batteries are 7 tenths of a millimeter less than a CR2032 battery, so you'll need to be cautious about the placement of the replacement key for Volvo s40.
