The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can start spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky since there are two pins for the connector and they perform different functions but the most effective method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. If you are having problems with this component, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched in gazoline, the fourth was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine without sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car is able to start when the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is connected but it still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is zero.

I don't know what to do. I believe that I've eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that I might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or at a parts store. It is easy to test them - simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must be aware of the position and speed of the crankshaft to determine fuel injector timing, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you encounter a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could lead to an engine shut down.

The signs of a failing G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal, and/or a misfire when you're in gear. If you experience any of these problems, it is likely that your sensor is deteriorating and should be replaced. The good thing is that they are very cheap and readily available particularly if you're looking at a Bosch sensor, which is what ours are. Alternatively, the GM version of this unit is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the cause of numerous issues with your vehicle.
