3 Wheel Double Buggy

The Fox 5 is an all-terrain stroller that is ideal for parents who like to go off-road. It has impressive suspension and large wheels that are puncture-proof.

Our test participant Claire was impressed by the clean packaging, easy-to-open and deemed it to be one of the quickest and most simple pieces of baby gear to put together. She took it out for a spin around some rough terrain and was very pleased with its performance.

Seats

Most 3 wheel stroller and car seat wheel double buggies are designed as single pushchairs. However, some can be modified to accept the second seat using adapters. You'll also find that some models allow you to add a ride-on board for older children who want to walk but still need some assistance.

For a lightweight option that's great for city streets, take a look at the Joie Evalite Duo. It's a breeze to move and has a deep basket that has plenty of storage space. It can be used for twins beginning at birth and can accommodate two car seats or a carrycot with seat. However, the seats need to be oriented forward and there's no room for a shopping bag underneath and you'll need a sidepack for that.

Mountain Buggy Duet will be the best choice if you enjoy off-road driving. It is a side by tandem with the most compact footprint of any double buggy on the market. This makes it easier to squeeze through doors that are narrow and on public transport, and enables you to climb up and down kerbs without too much trouble. The adjustable handlebar has an additional handbrake for security and safety.

Another lightweight choice is the UPPAbaby Vista 2 Double, which can be used to accommodate twins or a toddler and baby. The seats have multi-position reclining and UPF 50+ sunshades, and the canopy can be adjusted to keep the sun out of your child's eyes. The Vista 2 can even be transformed into a triple using the addition of UPPAbaby's "PiggyBack board for older and mobile kids.

The iCandy Orange double buggies are among the most well-known available. This is due to their superb comfort. It's an all-terrain model with a soft suspension, which is able to handle bumpy surfaces. It can accommodate a massive 30 seating configurations and includes a built-in ride-on board for older kids who prefer to walk, and a 'cinema seating' mode which raises the back seat to allow for better visibility.

Alternately, the phil&teds dots is a fantastic single buggy that is available from day one which is then able to take 2 (or 3!) in various configurations. This is especially useful if you have an infant in a car seat, since the frame can be fitted with a wedgie for optimum lying flat, or car seat adapters to many brands.

Suspension

The suspension of a double 3 wheel buggy will determine the ease with which your child/children and you can push it. It is crucial to enjoy a smooth ride as babies can feel every bump that comes along the road. This is particularly relevant if you drive on rough terrain, such as grass or unpaved roads. Some models also have locking front wheels to help with maneuvering and getting over obstacles such as curbs.

Some models use air-filled tyres which will give you a great all-terrain experience, but they can be prone to punctures so make sure you have a spare set in the trunk. Some models have gel-filled or foam-filled tyres that are designed to absorb bumps. They can be less likely to puncture, however they may cause discomfort for your child if they decide to run.

MFM reviewer Kath tested the Urban Glide 2 with her toddler and newborn and found it to be extremely capable on terrain that is difficult to navigate. Folding

A three-wheel double buggy folds very well for storage. You can find options that fold flat and stand up (as if they were in a pushchair) and also ones that pop out to reveal more of an umbrella-like fold that has a hand-operated brake. The more wheels the buggy has, in general, the easier it is to maneuver through rough terrain. This is particularly applicable when the wheels are bigger than average. This will give you more stability and reduce the chance that your child are likely to tip over or fall over.

The most popular model is the iCandy Wave, which can be used as early as birth with an infant car seat and it can be converted into a side-byside double buggy when your child is old enough for them to sit beside each one. It's a comfortable and light-feeling model, which makes it easy to push and comes with extra features like raincover and a bumper bar.

Another option is the phil&teds sport, which is future proof since it's great as a single buggy from day one and then adjusts to accommodate 2 (or even three!) The frame's clever design expands widthways to accommodate the additional seat, but it only weighs around 11kg, making it easy to lift and manoeuvre. It can be used with an infant car seat, a carrycot or both. This allows you to have the best 3 wheel travel system of both worlds.
