How to Replace an programming audi key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located near the transmission's edge just above the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

young-couple-holding-the-keys-of-a-new-car-select-2023-04-03-23-35-08-utc-scaled.jpgLocated on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 through the grey wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can start spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error Audi Etron Key message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test because there are various pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation. If you are having problems with this part, check for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or the injectors aren't firing at all. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs. Three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine with no sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I think the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is plugged in however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows temperatures of -49c. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, as i believe that i've eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and both function in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or at a parts store. It is easy to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to know both the position and speed of the crankshaft to determine timing of the fuel injector, etc. To accomplish this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you encounter a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger an engine shut down.

The signs of a failing G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter the gears are shifting faster than normal, and/or a misfire when you are in gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these symptoms. They are cheap and easy-to-find, especially in the case of a Bosch unit like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this part is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the reason behind numerous issues with your vehicle. It is an important part of the transmission of your replacement audi key cost uk since it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slowly the engine is spinning. This sensor could cause the transmission to fail and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear and transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49, via an uncolored wire. The ECU is then able to process this signal to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost, and also sends it on to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should detect a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these points. This is a standard part across the audi key 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC until the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good ones could be available in wrecking yards.
