Your clinician will explain the various options for medication and if you decide to start on medication we will recommend titrating the dose to maximize the benefits/side effects balance for you.

This process could take a few weeks and it involves gradually altering your child's medication until the appropriate balance is achieved. It's not uncommon to have to titrate several times before finding the one that is best for your child's ADHD symptoms. It is essential for parents to take part in this process of titration, and keep an watchful eye on their child's behavior so that they can let the doctor know if the medicine is helping or causing side effects.

If you do not decide to return to NHS treatment the medication you take will be provided with a private prescription which you'll need to pay for at the pharmacy (this is not included in the consultation fee). You must attend six monthly appointments to monitor your medication. This includes blood pressure and pulse readings. Annual exams are also required.

We also advise to check if your GP accepts a 'Shared Care Agreement which means that once you are discharged from the clinic, you will be returned to them for the prescription for the medication.

Medication

Medication is a key part of the journey for many people looking for a private ADHD diagnosis. Getting an appointment with an NHS psychiatrist can be difficult and time-consuming. NHS waiting lists can be notoriously long and GPs may be reluctant to refer patients to specialist services.

Asking your GP to refer you to Right to Choose is one way to avoid this (see psychiatry - UK and ADHD 360). You will need to complete forms that differ by provider however the most commonly used ones are self-reporting questions and medical histories dating to childhood and adulthood. These will help your clinician determine any issues that could suggest you should not take ADHD medications if they are prescribed.

If you are titrated, the medication will be a combination stimulants and nonstimulant medications. These will be carefully assessed and monitored to determine the right combination for you. The titration process may be lengthy and may need a few extra appointments before you're able to stay on your dosage.

Depending on the type of medication you're taking, follow up appointments could be scheduled monthly or quarterly. Your clinician will check whether you are safe with the medication, document any side effects you have experienced and make any necessary adjustments to ensure that you remain on a safe dosage. You will be required to go to an annual review as well as a routine health exam that includes blood pressure, pulse, and weight measurements.

For some people it could be that they are satisfied with their medication and don't require any further discussion on their titration. If, however, they require further discussions regarding their titration and treatment plans, it's possible to be passed back to the private clinic that made their initial assessment. If this happens, the titration appointment will be included in their consultation fees and they will be given their medication on an individual prescription (see Consultation fees above). It could cost more than an NHS prescription because the pharmacy will charge for the medication.
