Three Wheeled Buggies

Three-wheeled buggies are great for strolling around the neighborhood or jogging. Their compact 3 wheel stroller design makes it easy to maneuver, even in tight spaces.

If you're looking for a smooth ride on your baby, opt for models with 360deg front wheels with swivel. However, they are susceptible to punctures so be prepared with a repair kit.

Frame made of sturdy material

New figures show that the three-wheeled buggies, the emblem of the noughties, which had more money than common sense, are in rapid decline. Four-wheelers are replacing them, and are more flexible and simple to drive, while also looking fashionable.

The bigger the wheels are the more your buggy will be able to deal with uneven surfaces and bumpy pavements. The larger wheels on both the front and back makes it easier to maneuver and more stable when walking downhill or over difficult terrain.

MFM reviewer Kath tested the buggy with a newborn and 3 year old and found that it was able to withstand cobbles, grass, rough pavements, dirt tracks and kerbs. She said "it is solid to push and very solid when going over difficult terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable, so require occasional pumping) have suspension built-in that was very comfortable for my kids.

The size and shape of the seat is a further factor to think about. You'll want it to be big enough for your child's comfort and you will also want it to be able to recline for them to lie flat. Certain three-wheel buggies have an option to lie flat completely while others only allow for a parent facing one.

The Roma Atlas is a great option for off-road or wet walks. This buggy is suitable for a single child from birth and can be modified to accommodate two children as your family expands. It is suitable for infants and toddlers until age 4 and comes with a bumper bar, raincover, improved 5-point harness, and a large cushioned seat. The storage options are great as well, with a large basket, zip pockets in the hood and an attractive pouch at the rear of the seat unit.

Wheels with larger diameter

Larger wheels mean your buggy will have more stability on uneven terrain, which is ideal for off-road buggies. They also allow you to move the pushchair around tight spaces. A lot of three-wheeled buggies come with the front wheels that swivel to help you navigate around tight corners, whereas others are specifically designed for running and have fixed front wheels that lock to increase the speed and stability at which they can be driven. This can also help when you crash into a tree root or stray kerb as the front wheel will lift up slightly to prevent you from hitting it.

Many 3 wheel pushchairs feature air filled tyres which means they can handle different terrains and are more flexible than 4-wheeler. They are also lighter. However, they're susceptible to punctures so you'll need an repair kit, spare inner tube and pump handy.

Some of our favourite 3-wheelers include the Mountain Buggy Core and Venicci Carbo Lux. These buggies, as per MFM's Kath, have larger wheels, which she claims "perform well on gravel roads, grass and market town cobbles" and are able to go up or down kerbs. They also have a suspension system which in her words "smoothes out bumps very effectively".

Buggies with bigger wheels can be quite large, and can be difficult to fit into narrow spaces. This can be problematic if you intend to use it for jogging or have to squeeze through doorways that are narrow while out and about. Many models have compact folding options that permit you to take off the front wheels and store them more compactly.

Easy to Manoeuvre

One of the main benefits of a three-wheel buggy is that it's much more maneuverable especially with a child in the back. They are designed to ensure that the front wheels can be turned on a dime and are easy to navigate, making them ideal for challenging terrain such as parks, cobblestones as well as bumpy roads and dirt tracks.

MFM reviewer Kath tried a 3 wheel strollers-wheeler with her newborn and toddler and said: "The Terrain was a delight to maneuver on the ground with the swivel rear wheel being especially helpful. I was also amazed by the way it dealt with kerbs using the hand-operated break. I found it extremely stable when driving downhill or over uneven terrain."

The only downside of this amazing mobility is that the 3 wheel Pushchair wheel buggy's bigger wheels sometimes mean that it can struggle in tight spaces - something to be aware of if you live in a city region. If this is an issue then a 4-wheeler might be a better option for you.

Bumper bar
