Window Sash Repairs

Window sashes need to be checked regularly for mold, mildew and damage. By catching problems before they become serious you can save money on repairs in the future.

The sash is an interior framing that can be moved vertically up or down in windows that are open. This article will show you how to perform simple repairs to sash.

Weather Stripping

Wood window sashes give the classic look to your home. If properly maintained, they will last for a long time. However, they can get damaged or deteriorated over time due to exposure or normal wear. The first step to repair sash windows is to address weather stripping. It's found on both the sash as well as the frame. It could cause drafts if worn or loose. Take the sash off, and mark its width and height so you can purchase new weather stripping that is compatible with the original.

Once it's fully cured, apply a top coat of acrylic latex paint. This coating will protect the putty and give your sash a new look.

Sash Hardware

The hardware that holds the windows sashes can become worn out with time and use. This can result in the window or door that is difficult to open or close. The good thing is that fixing and replacing this hardware is generally quite simple and inexpensive. If you're having trouble opening the sash, spray some grease into the jamb channel. Then, slide the sash out to see if this resolves the issue. If not, the issue is likely to be with the sash balance and you'll have to take off the sash to access the hardware.
